Iran Ships Still Blocked at Hormuz Despite Trump's Announcement

(MENAFN) Iranian vessels are continuing to be turned away from the Strait of Hormuz despite US President Donald Trump's assertion that a naval blockade on Iran had been lifted, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported Saturday.

Citing accounts from Iranian sailors, the report said restrictions remain firmly in place, with vessels still receiving direct warnings from US Central Command to stay clear of the area.

Trump declared in a Truth Social post Friday that the US naval blockade "will now be lifted" — a claim that on-the-ground accounts swiftly contradicted.

Trump's Conditions
In the same post, Trump set out a series of conditions for a broader deal with Tehran, demanding that Iran formally commit to never acquiring a nuclear weapon. He further called for the Strait of Hormuz to be "immediately open," with unrestricted two-way shipping, and stated that any water mines in the area would be removed.

Trump also stipulated that Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles would be identified in coordination with Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), then destroyed.

Tehran, however, has pushed back on the framing, maintaining that nuclear issues fall outside the scope of the current stage of diplomatic talks.

How the Standoff Began
Tensions at the strait escalated sharply on February 28, when Iran tightened its grip over the Strait of Hormuz, restricting passage for vessels linked to Israel and the United States following joint strikes on Iranian territory. Washington subsequently imposed its own naval restrictions, limiting traffic in and out of Iranian ports — a measure that, according to Tasnim, remains very much in effect.
