I-70 sign
(August 27, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will close the left lane of traffic and shift it to the eastbound I-70 collector/distributor lane at the I-70/I-81 Interchange in Washington County from 7 p.m. Monday night, August 31 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, weather permitting. The closure is necessary to set a temporary barrier wall along the current interchange configuration.
During the left-lane closure, all eastbound I-70 traffic will shift into the I-70 collector/distributor lane (right lane). Motorists will travel in that lane past the work zone and then merge back onto I-70 eastbound.
Once the barrier wall is in place, the configuration will remain in place through the next phase of construction. Contractor Triton Construction, Inc. from St. Albans, WV. will perform the work. Motorists will be guided by mounted signs, channelizing devices and message boards.
The State Highway Administration is Serious About Safety. Pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain alert and avoid distractions when traveling through the work zone. Motorists should obey all posted speed limits. Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
