Halfway Through 100 Days of Summer, Vision Zero Urges Drivers to Make Safety a Priority
North Dakota has reached the halfway point of the 100 Days of Summer, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when traffic deaths historically increase. As families travel for vacations, community celebrations and weekends at the lake, Vision Zero reminds everyone that the choices they make behind the wheel, and in the passenger seat, can save lives.
Preliminary data shows that from Jan. 1 through July 12, 46 people lost their lives on North Dakota roads, compared to 43 during the same period in 2025. Since the start of the 100 Days of Summer, 14 people have died on North Dakota roads.
“Summer is meant to be a time to enjoy everything North Dakota has to offer, but every life lost on our roads is a tragedy that affects families, friends and entire communities,” said Karin Mongeon, director of the NDDOT Highway Safety Division. “The good news is that every driver and passenger has the ability to save lives by taking personal responsibility every time they get in a vehicle.”
Several traffic safety trends are contributing to this year’s increase in fatalities. More than half (54%) of people killed in vehicles where seat belts were available were not wearing one. Speed-related traffic deaths have nearly doubled, increasing from six at this point last year to 11 in 2026.
Lane departure continues to be one of the leading factors in fatal crashes, contributing to 23 fatal crashes this year. Pedestrian fatalities remain elevated with six deaths, the same as last year. Although every crash has different contributing factors, these trends reinforce that many crashes are preventable.
Warmer weather often means more people are traveling, attending community events and spending time outdoors. Increased traffic volumes, combined with a false sense of security from favorable road conditions, can lead drivers to take risks they may not otherwise take.
Vision Zero encourages everyone to do their part by:
Buckling up. Every seat, every trip, every time.
Following posted speed limits and adjusting for road conditions.
Staying focused and putting the phone away.
Driving sober and planning ahead for a sober ride home.
Watching for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists
