TROOPER ASSAULTED DURING TRAFFIC STOP NEAR BURDETTE; THREE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

BURDETTE, Ark. — On Thursday, August 27, 2026, at around 3 p.m., an Arkansas State Police (ASP) Trooper stopped a blue Chevrolet Equinox for a traffic violation on Interstate 55 near the 56-mile marker.
During the stop, the Trooper attempted to take the driver, Pedro Gonzalez, 36, of Luxora, into custody due to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer. Gonzalez refused to comply, and resisted arrest. During the altercation, Gonzalez attempted to reach for the Trooper’s firearm.
During the altercation with Gonzalez, the vehicle’s front-seat and rear-seat passengers exited the vehicle and fled through a nearby wooded area. Gonzalez then escaped custody and fled the area.
Personnel with the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, Blytheville Police Department, ASP Criminal Investigation Division Agents, ASP Air 4, Osceola Police Department, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the Arkansas Department of Corrections responded to assist. All three subjects were located approximately 200 yards from the traffic stop, hiding along a ditch embankment.
Gonzalez was treated at a Little Rock hospital for injuries sustained during the incident before being transported to the Mississippi County Detention Center, where he was booked on charges of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Fleeing, Resisting Arrest, No Proof of Insurance, and No Driver’s License.
The Trooper was not injured during the incident.
Passenger Hermelinda Perez Hernandez, 38, of Mexico, was charged with Obstruction and Fleeing. Passenger Bersaino Gonzalez, 39, of Mexico, was charged with Fleeing.
The investigation is ongoing, and no other information is being released.
