Long-term lane closure and traffic shift to begin on I-85 south over the Roanoke River in Mecklenburg County

RICHMOND – Contractor crews for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will implement a long-term southbound lane closure and traffic shift on Interstate 85 (I-85) over the Roanoke River as early as Oct. 2, which will be in effect through late Fall 2028. Also, the on-ramp from Route 903 to I-85 south will temporarily close on Oct. 2 for crews to safely set up the traffic shift. Both operations will occur as weather allows. Motorists will be advised if schedules change.   

The new traffic pattern will close the right lane of southbound I-85 at Exit 4 (Bracey/Lake Gaston/Route 903), merging traffic into the left lane and shifting that traffic across the median, where drivers will use the inside lane of northbound I-85 to cross the Roanoke River and transition back to the south side of the interstate. I-85 north motorists will continue to use the outside (right) lane.     

Travelers should follow posted signage and comply with the reduced 60 mph speed limit throughout the work zone.
