Trucker Blockades Choke Southern Italy, Leaving Shelves Bare

(MENAFN) Trucker protests over soaring fuel costs engulfed southern Italy on Monday, with road and port blockades snarling deliveries and leaving some supermarket shelves empty, according to an Italian news agency.

Truckers shut off access to the commercial port of Naples, while road blockades and demonstrations also hit Calabria, Basilicata, Puglia and Sicily.

The standstill has slowed the movement of goods, fresh produce above all, and shortages have been reported in parts of Campania, Sicily and Calabria.

The protests have also reportedly disrupted the collection and delivery of agricultural products, fueling fears among producers of mounting losses.

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said he was confident the government could free up delayed funds, listen to the truckers’ demands and open a dialogue to relieve pressure on roads and highways.

The truckers are protesting climbing diesel prices and are demanding higher transport rates.

The Transport Ministry is scheduled to meet representatives of national industry associations on Tuesday.
